There can be some confusion in the marketplace when it comes to what is Waterproof grout and what is Water resistant grout.
Let’s start with the definition of the two words.

“Waterproof” = Not permitting the passage of water; it is impervious to water.

“Water-Resistant” = Allows the passage of water through it but it does not break down in water and it is able to resist water penetration to a small degree.

Waterproof

All cement-based grouts are water resistant so they all allow the passage of water through them without breaking down. The more polymer that is in the grout the greater the resistance to water penetration. So highly Polymer modified grouts like ARDEX FS and FL or BAL Micromax 2 have more resistance to water penetration then ARDEX C2 or standard BAL Grout.

The only Grout that is waterproof is Epoxy Grouts these do not allow water to pass through them, they are impervious to water. This also makes them fully resistant to staining so they are much easier to keep clean for example in Shower enclosures where tans and Hair dyes can destroy cement-based grouts or around urinals and toilets where staining can be an issue. Epoxy Grouts are also Chemical resistant which makes them ideal for areas subject to constant washing or wetting like Gyms, Swimming Pools and even Dairy’s that can be subject to Lactic Acid attack.

So, if you see a cement based grout with Waterproof on it, there is a good possibility they meant water resistant.
