Frequently Asked Questions

Ardex Building Products Ireland Limited Products

How do I choose the right ARDEX product?

Choose according to the substrate, application area, finish material, expected traffic, moisture conditions and drying-time requirements. Check the product technical data sheet before use.

Do I need to prepare the surface before applying an ARDEX product?

Yes. Surfaces should generally be sound, clean, dry where required and free from dust, grease, loose material and contaminants that could affect adhesion.

Can ARDEX products be used over existing tiles?

Some ARDEX systems can be used over properly prepared existing tiles. Tiles must be firmly bonded, clean and free from residues; follow the relevant product instructions.

Are ARDEX products suitable for wet areas?

ARDEX offers waterproofing systems suitable for areas such as bathrooms, showers and wet rooms. Waterproofing should be installed as a complete compatible system.

How long should I wait before tiling over an ARDEX levelling compound?

Drying and curing times vary by product, thickness, temperature, humidity and site conditions. Refer to the relevant technical data sheet before continuing.

Can ARDEX tile adhesives be used with underfloor heating?

Selected ARDEX adhesives and levelling compounds are suitable for use with underfloor heating. Confirm compatibility for the specific product and heating system.

What tile types can ARDEX adhesives be used with?

Depending on the product, ARDEX adhesives can be suitable for ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, mosaic and other tile types. Check suitability before installation.

Can ARDEX products be used outdoors?

Certain ARDEX products are formulated for exterior applications. Use only products specifically approved for outdoor exposure and follow the preparation and curing guidance.

How should unused ARDEX material be stored?

Store unopened products in a cool, dry, frost-free place, protected from moisture. Once opened, reseal packaging tightly and use material within the recommended period.

Where can I get technical advice about an ARDEX system?

Contact ARDEX directly or an authorised distributor and have details ready about the substrate, application, environment and selected finish material.

Can ARDEX levelling compounds be used on timber or plywood subfloors?

Yes, certain ARDEX smoothing and levelling compounds are formulated for use over suitable timber or plywood substrates. The subfloor must be structurally sound, securely fixed and prepared according to the specific product’s instructions.

What is the difference between ARDEX self-levelling compounds and screeds?

Self-levelling compounds are typically applied in thinner layers to create a smooth, flat surface ready for a floorcovering, while ARDEX fast-track screeds are used to build up floor build-ups or falls and can carry greater depths, often with faster drying times.

Do ARDEX grouts and adhesives need to come from the same product system?

For the best results, ARDEX recommends using compatible products from within its own range (adhesive, grout, waterproofing) so that the installation performs as a coordinated system. Mixing brands may affect performance or warranty cover.

Can ARDEX products be used in swimming pools or areas of constant water immersion?

ARDEX manufactures specific waterproofing and tiling systems designed for constant water immersion, such as swimming pools. Only products specifically rated for immersion should be used in these conditions.

Are ARDEX tile adhesives suitable for large-format tiles?

Yes, ARDEX offers fibre-reinforced, high slump-resistant adhesives specifically designed to support large-format tiles and minimise lippage or slump during installation.

What ventilation or temperature conditions are needed when applying ARDEX products?

Most ARDEX products require application within a specified temperature range and adequate ventilation to cure properly. Extremes of heat, cold, or humidity can affect working time and final performance, so check the technical data sheet.

Can ARDEX products be used for crack isolation or movement joints?

ARDEX offers dedicated crack isolation and waterproofing membranes that can also provide a degree of movement accommodation. Structural movement joints should still be respected and not tiled over directly.

Is training or technical support available for installers using ARDEX systems?

ARDEX provides technical support, site consultation and training resources to contractors and installers to help ensure products are used correctly and to specification.

How do I find the technical data sheet (TDS) or safety data sheet (SDS) for a specific ARDEX product?

Technical and safety data sheets for individual ARDEX products are generally available on the ARDEX website under each product listing, or can be requested directly from ARDEX or a distributor.

Can ARDEX products be used with underfloor damp-proof membranes?

Yes, ARDEX offers damp proof membrane systems designed to protect floorcoverings from residual moisture and these can be used as part of a wider ARDEX flooring system alongside compatible levelling and adhesive products.
