ARDEX UK, world leaders of high quality flooring and tiling products were pleased to work alongside DMC Rail Ltd of Tilbury, Essex to provide a 4,300m2 screeding, tiling and grouting solution for the new, state-of-the-art Northern ticket hall at King’s Cross St Pancras Underground station. The new ticket hall funded by the DfT, is the latest improvement to be delivered as part of Transport for London’s Investment Programme.
The ticket hall required a durable, flat and smooth floor surface, which could receive a floorcovering at the earliest possible opportunity. With an excellent track record for successful commercial flooring installations, ARDEX A 35 rapid drying screed was used at 85mm as it provides key benefits including ease of use, cost effectiveness and the all important, fast track performance. The ARDEX A 35 cement and sand screed hardens so quickly, that it can be walked on after only 3 hours and rapid drying times mean further work can commence after just 24 hours, significantly reducing down time. A wait of at least a month would have been required before a standard cement/sand screed would be hard and dry enough for further work to proceed.
The new large format tiles were fixed using ARDEX S 21 rapid hardening floor tile bedding mortar. The inherent hardening properties of ARDEX S 21 allow walkability and further work to commence after only 3 hours, once again reducing valuable down time.
The tile joints were grouted with ARDEX–FLEX FL Rapid Setting Flexible Grout in Grey. Specifically developed for use with wide tile joints from 3-15mm, ARDEX-FLEX FL is suitable for use with all types of tiles including porcelain, ceramic, most natural stone and quarry tiles, as well as extruded tiles and glass blockwork. With key features including flexibility, water repellence, ease of application and dirt resistance, plus availability in 32 fabulous colours, it is easy to see why ARDEX-FLEX tile grouts are a favoured choice with many tile fixers.
